By focusing on members' needs, the people of Kaiser Permanente have
built the largest nonprofit health care organization* in American
history. The story of Kaiser Permanente is a history of
excellence, a legacy of each generation's contribution to understanding
health and meeting the needs of members.
Kaiser Permanente evolved from industrial health care programs
for construction, shipyard and steel mill workers during World War
II. Its founders were Sidney Garfield, M.D. and Henry J.
Kaiser who became partners in advancing the concept of pre-paid
health care.
Today, we serve approximately 8.2 million people in nine
states and the District of Columbia, thanks to the dedication
of some 147,000 employees and physicians. In a single year we schedule
more than 32 million outpatient visits, deliver 90,000 babies, perform
431,000 surgeries, and fill about 109 million prescriptions.
Kaiser Permanente continually works to elevate the state
of health care with progressive products, services and advancements.
Our vision of the future remains focused on improving the health
of our members and the communities we serve. Kaiser Permanente is
composed of Kaiser Foundation Health Plans (nonprofit corporations),
Kaiser Foundation Hospitals (a nonprofit, public-benefit corporation),
and the Permanente Medical Groups (for-profit professional organizations).
The Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Program is one of
the largest health care community benefit or philanthropic ventures
in the nation. In 2002, we began the process of organizing
our Community Benefit Program to focus on:
* Health care financing and delivery to vulnerable populations
* Evidence-based medicine
* Education of health care professionals and consumers
* National public health policy
We are a strong voice in the forums in which public policy
is discussed, debated and shaped. Kaiser Permanente's Institute
for Health Policy works with foundations, policy institutes, research
programs, policymakers and other organizations to develop unbiased
information about health care policy alternatives. The Institute
has played an active role in advancing national patient safety policies
that reduce medical and system errors and we are viewed as an important
advocate for patient safety.
Kaiser Permanente's Educational Theatre Programs are highly
regarded as part of our community outreach efforts. More
than 6.5 million people have attended Educational Theatre Programs
since their inception 15 years ago. The theatrical programs address
topics such as substance abuse, self-esteem, alternatives to violence,
HIV prevention and grief and coping skills. Free performances take
place at schools and are often open to the public. Resource materials
for students, teachers and parents reinforce the health messages
in each production.
Our community involvement helps improve the health of the
communities we serve and builds pride among our employees.
Kaiser Permanente employees are enthusiastic participants in community
events, such as the March of Dimes Walk America and the American
Diabetes Association Walk for a Cure. They also give generously
of their time, talent, and energy to organizations such as Habitat
for Humanity, Boys & Girls Clubs, and the American Cancer Society.
