Spanish occupation of the future land of California began in 1769 with an expedition of 60 persons led by Gaspar de Portola moved through the area now known as Los Angeles. They camped by a river (Los Angeles river today) where fertile soil and the potential for irrigation was evident to members of the party. Father Juan Crespi created the first settlement naming the river El Rio de Nuestra Senora la Reyna de Los Angeles de Porciuncula, translated means "The River of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula."

In September 1771 Father Junipero Serra and his group of Spaniards founded the San Gabriel Mission as the center of the first habitable community in an area of Gabrielino Indians.

California was ruled by Spain until 1822, Mexico assumed jurisdiction over the land. A period of hostilities with Mexico began in 1846, and the area came under U.S. control with the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo making California a United States territory.

It became familiarly known as the Ciudad de Los Angeles, "City of Angels," and on April 4, 1850 became the City of Los Angeles.

On Sept. 9, 1850 California became the 31st state in the Union. California was ceded by Mexico in Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. California had a military government until becoming an official state.
